Many people in search of help with a neurodevelopmental disorder find themselves overwhelmed with what steps to take next. At Family First Chiropractic, we are here to support your family and give you comfort in knowing that there is hope!

Sensory Processing Disorders (SPD's) are essentially a disruption of the brain that results in gaps, delays, or variations in the way a child's nervous system develops. The most common sensory processing disorders are: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning Disorder (LD), and Various Psychiatric Disorders. Children with sensory processing disorders have trouble processing incoming sensory input to the brain, which can cause neurological disorganization. When disorganization is created, inefficient motor, academic, or emotional output is the result.

The nervous system is greatly affected in children with sensory processing disorders, causing issues such as hyperactivity, attention issues, sleep challenges, behavior problems, social issues, and more. In addition, the nervous system is so intimately linked with the digestive and immune systems that it can also contribute to bowel and bladder problems,

autoimmune challenges, and more.

Chiropractors examine and look for what is called subluxations, or misalignments of the spine that create pressure on the nervous system, leading to improper neurological communication into and out of the central nervous system. The communication disconnection between the brain and body is one of the primary reasons so many children with sensory processing disorders have challenges with behavior, sensory processing, and learning. All of this eventually puts the nervous system into a chronic state of stress, which wreaks havoc on the immune system and digestive systems because both of them are down-regulated during chronic states of stress. This leaves a child more susceptible to allergies, asthma, eczema, and other

inflammatory-type reactions.

By addressing these subluxations, a specific chiropractic adjustment restores proper balance and alignment to the spine and restores proper function to the central nervous system. Dr. Jessica believes that when a family has a child who is challenged by something like spectrum disorders, the number one thing they need is someone who can support them. By reaching out to doctors who are caring and empathetic, you can be rest assured that you will get the support and care your child needs to overcome these challenges and lead a bright, promising life.
